2015-2016 Little Rock Heart Ball

Sweetheart Program:

The Sweetheart program is designed to teach young women about heart and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States. The ladies participate in education classes, social events, volunteer at area hospitals and take part in fundraising efforts.

The Sweetheart program was founded in 1998 by Eileen and Dr. Ricardo Sotomora. In the 19 years of the program, nearly one thousand women have participated, volunteering a multitude of community service hours.

The Heart Ball will be held in the spring(date TBD) thereby extending the program this year to eight months rather than the traditional five months. The American Heart Association’s mission – building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is central to every activity of the program. Participants learn about cardiovascular health and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices during their tours at Baptist Health, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Arkansas Heart Hospital, CHI St. Vincent Health System and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Sweethearts are also certified in infant and adult CPR.

Volunteering is a size able portion of the program requirements. While active in the program, Sweethearts serve a minimum of 20 community service/education hours that focus on how to become champions for heart health and stroke prevention. They are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to volunteer at local hospitals. Those who give their time are eligible for awards within the program, including the Allison Justiss Sweetheart Scholarship and the Sotomora Award, both of which are awarded annually.

Memorable social events include the Welcome Reception; a sleepover filled with fun and games at the Arkansas Arts Center; the Mother Daughter Luncheon; and the Father Daughter BBQ, which includes learning how to two step!

While heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, the number of cases are decreasing. Through the Sweetheart program, young women learn skills to empower them to lead healthier lives and influence their friends and families. The hope is that with information from the program, these young women will help make even greater strides in the health of Arkansans.
